Is it possible to change the item listing duration without having to redo the ad?

This is not currently a feature. The reason being, when a customer purchases an advert, the terms to which they agreed are stored alongside the ad. This means packages can be edited without affecting existing adverts and the changes apply to new adverts only. I would imagine people getting quite upset if their terms were changed mid duration without warning.

I can however consider adding an admin only option to override the duration.

Dont think that would work as you would want the advertiser to pay the difference between what he/she booked to start with and the new fee.
